OFA and PennHip X-rays

Our clinic is equipped and certified to perform OFA and PennHip radiographs.

OFA or Orthopedic Foundation for Animals

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), established in 1966, is a non-profit organization established to assist breeders in identifying canines with hip dysplasia. Since its inception, the OFA’s focus has expanded to include numerous additional hereditary concerns (i.e. craniomandibular osteopathy, elbow and patella deformities, etc.).

When breeders use the term OFA, they are typically referring to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals evaluation of a canine’s hips. Any owner can have the hips of his or her dog checked for hip dysplasia by having us x-ray the hips when your dog is 2 years old and submitting the “film” to the OFA. Radiologists then generate a radiographic report depicting any abnormalities. An OFA hip evaluation may yield one of the following seven ratings; Excellent, Good, or Fair hips (assigned an OFA number) or Borderline, Mild, Moderate, or Severe (failed so are not assigned an OFA number).

PennHIP Radiographic Evaluation at a Glance

Research has shown that hip laxity leads to Hip Dysplasia. Since passive hip laxity is highly heritable its measurement is a very good selection criterion for better hips.

The PennHIP method is a different way (then OFA) to assess, measure and interpret hip joint laxity. It consists of three separate radiographs: the distraction view, the compression view and the hip-extended view (see below). The distraction view and compression view, developed by Dr. Smith, are used to obtain accurate and precise measurements of joint laxity and congruity (looseness and smoothness). The hip-extended view is used to obtain supplementary information regarding the existence of DJD(degenerative joint disease) in the hip joint.

The advantage of using the PennHip procedure is that dogs as young as 4months old can be radiographed with accuracy rather than waiting until a dog is 2 years old with OFA.
